The Cold War on European soil was largely because of economic reason. Western Europe was under the influence and to a certain degree under the control of the United States, and they all wanted capitalist systems. Their goal was to make all the economies open, so that there's a free movement of capital through them without any problem, with the private ownership being the one that have the main say in the economy. The Soviet Union and its allies had different politics though. They wanted and practiced communism, so they wanted to spread the central planning, thus the command economy type, and all the countries to be self-sustaining, with the government being the only economic power in the country.

major events of the early years of the civil war from 1861-1863:

The Civil War began. The South had advantages as they were better prepared, had better war plans and generals. North was not well prepared and did not have good generals to command their soldiers.


Major events of the middle years of the civil war from 1863-1865:

As the war dragged on, the advantages of the North from having more factories and better economy showed their effects to the various battles.  Key victories for the North at Gettysburg, Forts Henry and Donelson .


Major events of the ending years of the civil war after 1865:

After Gettysburg and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the South recognized it was losing the war. Cities of Petersberg and Richmond were taken by the North. The South retreated further and further. Even after Lincoln was killed in an assassination in 1865, the South had lost and surrendered.

Factories/textile mills, were usually located by rivers, which in a literal sense, would be powered by a water turbine/wheel in the river. The Factory workers consisted mostly of children and women, especially in textile mills. The women ran the factory, and factories were powered by water turbines. I didn't know which type of answer you wanted, so you can pick from either one or take both.
