The reason why Austria-Hungary opposed Serbia's desire to establish an independent state is that the rising nationalism in Serbia was threatening to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Austria-Hungary was worried that if Serbia became independent, it would damage the stability of the empire. Moreover, the empire thought that the nationalism could spread to other Slavic countries, and work as a unifying force against the empire.
