Answer:

In 1663, Charles II granted eight noble proprietors a stake of land that spread from the Virginia border to Florida and reached from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific as a reward for helping to restore him to the throne. By 1670, the first permanent town was established, Charles Town (Charleston), though it was later moved to a better place. Political problems and the growth of the southern area led the colony to be separated in 1712 into North and South Carolina, though they were still managed by the same government and the boundary between them was never fully established until after the War of 1812. Carolina showed signs of their feistiness early in the history of this country when, in 1719, they rebelled against the proprietors and turned the leadership of their colony back over to the king of Britain.
