The situation is quite the opposite. The Oregon trail was used by settlers who went westwards while the Sante Fe trail was used by the military and traders because it was an important trading route towards Mexico. The Santa Fe trade route fell into memory when the railroad was introduced and merchants didn't have to use it anymore.
