Peytons escape is a difficult one. Immediately as he hits the water the soldiers open fire on him and he must swim to evade being shot after surviving a hanging. The soldiers even bring in artillery to kill him but the current pulls him away. While in the water, nature becomes so alive and powerful he can hear the sounds, see tiny detail, and feel things like never before. He drives himself tirelessly through the day, forcing himself to make it home at all costs. He is so exhausted he believes he has fallen asleep while walking because suddenly he arrives in front of his home where his wife is waiting with open arms. As he is about to clasp her in his arms, the truth of the situation becomes apparent as there is a blow to the back of his neck. It is his rope snapping his neck as he was hanged, the escape was just a dream, not real at all. Peyton died in a noose, hung for burning the bridge.

What is the tone or overall feeling the poem conveys?
andriy [413]

Answer:Loneliness

Loneliness is a dominant theme of "The Wanderer," and it intensifies the sorrowful tone that characterizes the poem. The narrator has lost his family, his friends, his lord, his home and his place in society. Now, he faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life as a solitary exile. His experience is that of many Anglo-Saxon warriors whose liege-lords were killed in battle. In a society organized around the bond between a lord and his sworn liegemen, all economic and geographic security, all personal and social identity, all safety, and all economic advancement came through the connection to the lord and to the meadhall where he and his men would meet to celebrate together. Having lost these, the wanderer has also lost his family, friends and home, probably in the battle which killed his lord.

Pie
1- In the case of Odysseus, he is a proud and reckless man who believes to be invincible. Because of these traits, he and his men fall in the hands of disaster, which teaches them of the insignificance of men before the gods.

2- Penelope is strong but naive. She promises the men who are trying to court her that she will choose one of them once she is done with a tapestry she must weave to honor her husband. However, because she needs more time as she believes that Odysseus will return, she cheats by undoing the tapestry every now and then. When the suitors find out, they become furious and take over the palace, ravaging through all her property, taking their women and eating all their food. However, because of her loyalty to her husband, she waits for him and keeps her promise. Because of this, she is able to receive him again upon his return.

3- Antinous is a violent ill-willed man who abuses the home of the queen while Odysseus is gone. Because of everything he proves to have done during his absence, Odysseus has no mercy for him in the end and lets him meet his violent death.

4- Telemachus, Odysseus's son, is also naive and insecure, but he is also very brave. Because of his faith in Athena, and belief in his father, he is able to grow himself to a man and fight valiantly against the suitors to defend his home and family.
