The Constitution grants the President the power to veto legislation and Congress the power to override that veto. The principle of government define in the above statement is checks and balances.

Further Explanation:

This power enables the principle of regulating checks on both the branches of the government. The Congress can override any legislation by two-third majority. By the fear of veto, President can put check on the legislative branch of the government. The Congress can balance with the help of the Senate by overriding the act with a two-third majority.

Checks and Balances are the unique features of the federal government as it ensures a restriction and limitation on each branch of the government. Separation of Power is a safeguard against the tyranny of any branch to get too much power. This threat ensures that the legislative branch of government views the content of the bill thoroughly, before it is sent to the President.

The Constitution gives the President 10 days to actuate the bill, if he/she gives signature on the bill it becomes the law. Two types of vetoes are there:Regular veto and Pocket veto. The President returns the bill without signing the bill to the house from where it has initiated the bill by giving a memo of its disapproval or the other way is by giving a “veto message”. The authority of the veto is mentioned in Article 1, Section 7. James Madison was the first president who used the pocket veto in 1812.
