The railroad was considered the greatest American technological achievement of the nineteenth century. It served as a vital link for trade and travel that connected the eastern and western halves to the late nineteenth century in the United States.

Because railroads were very cheap transportation options, the industries had a much lower cost of production transporting their products by the railroads than by transporting in other vehicles. As the cost of production includes the cost of transportation and is a factor influencing the final price of the goods produced, the price of these goods were lower as a result of the lower transportation costs.
