Because railroads were very cheap transportation options, the industries had a much lower cost of production transporting their products by the railroads than by transporting in other vehicles. As the cost of production includes the cost of transportation and is a factor influencing the final price of the goods produced, the price of these goods were lower as a result of the lower transportation costs.
