Explanation:

The independence of Cuba came with the Protocol of Peace signed between the United States and Spain on August 12, 1898. Spain had recently lost the Philippines and Puerto Rico, and had no hope of being able to hold onto Cuba. Moreover, Cuba was no longer considered a profitable colony. The Treaty of Paris signed on December 10, 1898 officially recognized Cuban independence.
