Books that are held as "classics" are often considered as such because they are thought to represent a "universal" experience, such as that of being a child. However, books by marginalized groups are considered to represent only that minority (in Angelou's case, the minority groups could be victims of abuse, underprivileged people, or African-American women, for example). This is often a biased view of American society, in which we overestimate the shared practices of the dominant group, while underestimate those of other groups.
