In the 1500s, England had not yet began e. the widespread importation of African slaves into the British Isle.
The late 16th century and 17th centuries saw much change in England as a result of many factors including:
- The Protestant Reformation which saw religious groups such as Catholics and Protestants come into conflict with each other
- An increase in population that reduced public welfare
- The introduction of enclosures which limited the movements of farmers and created the need for more land and,
- International rivalry with Spain for the control of the seas.
At that point however, England had not yet become very active in the slave trade and so did not see a lot of enslaved Africans in the British Isles.
