A single gram of a certain metallic substance has 0.52 grams of copper and 0.26 grams of zinc. The remaining portion of the subs

tance is nickel. Ben estimated that 0.2 gram of nickel is in 1 gram of the substance. He used this to estimate the amount of nickel in 35 grams of the substance. Find the result of Ben’s estimation strategy. Then, find the exact amount of nickel in 35 grams of the substance.

First of all, if we have 1 gram of a substance that has 0.52 gram of copper and 0.26 gram of zinc, the remainder will be:

Since we know that the remaining portion of the material is nickel, we have 0.22 gram of metal.

Now, Ben estimates that 1 gram of the substance has 0.2 gram of nickel. To find how many grams of metal are in 35 grams of the material, we are going to multiply the grams of the substance by the gram of nickel:

We can conclude that according to Ben, 35 grams of the content has 7 grams of metal.

But we know that in 1 gram of the substance are not 0.2 gram of nickel but 0.22. So let's multiply the grams of the material by 0.22 to find the actual grams of nickel in it:

We can conclude that 35 grams of the substance have 7.7 grams of metal.

What is the equation of the line perpendicular to 3x+y= -8that passes through -3,1? Write your answer in slope-intercept form. S
Gekata [30.6K]

Slope intercept form of a line perpendicular to 3x + y = -8, and passing through (-3,1) is y=\frac{1}{3} x+2

<u>Solution:</u>

Need to write equation of line perpendicular to 3x+y = -8 and passes through the point (-3,1).

Generic slope intercept form of a line is given by y = mx + c

where m = slope of the line.

Let's first find slope intercept form of 3x + y = -8

3x + y = -8

=> y = -3x - 8

On comparing above slope intercept form of given equation with generic slope intercept form y = mx + c , we can say that for line 3x + y = -8 , slope m = -3

And as the line passing through (-3,1) and is  perpendicular to 3x + y = -8, product of slopes of two line will be -1  as lies are perpendicular.

Let required slope = x

\begin{array}{l}{=x \times-3=-1} \\\\ {=>x=\frac{-1}{-3}=\frac{1}{3}}\end{array}

So we need to find the equation of a line whose slope is \frac{1}{3} and passing through (-3,1)

Equation of line passing through (x_1 , y_1) and having lope of m is given by

\left(y-y_{1}\right)=\mathrm{m}\left(x-x_{1}\right)

\text { In our case } x_{1}=-3 \text { and } y_{1}=1 \text { and } \mathrm{m}=\frac{1}{3}

Substituting the values we get,

\begin{array}{l}{(\mathrm{y}-1)=\frac{1}{3}(\mathrm{x}-(-3))} \\\\ {=>\mathrm{y}-1=\frac{1}{3} \mathrm{x}+1} \\\\ {=>\mathrm{y}=\frac{1}{3} \mathrm{x}+2}\end{array}

Hence the required equation of line is found using slope intercept form

1. The county fair charges $1.50 per ticket for the rides. Jermaine bought 20 tickets for the rides and spent a
makvit [3.9K]

Cost per ticket for the rides = $1.50.

a) Let us assume the number of ride tickets = x.

Total cost of x number of rides = y.

Total amount spent = $48.75.

Amount spent on 20 tickets = 20 × 1.50 = $30

<em>Fair admission charge = Total amount spent - Amount spent on 20 tickets</em>

<em> =  $48.75 - $30 = $18.75.</em>

Let us apply slope-intercept form y=mx+b to get the equation.

Total cost of x number of tickets at the rate $1.50 each ticket = 1.50x.

To<em>tal cost of fair = Total cost of x number of tickets + Fair admission charge.</em>

<h3>b) y = 1.50x + 18.75.</h3>
