Step One
How far as the slower train traveled in 3 hours?

Formula
d = r* t
r = 24 mph
t = 3 hours
d = ??
d = 24 * 3
d = 72 miles.

Step two
Start the clock at noon when the faster train begins to move. How much time will elapse before the fast train catches the slow one?

d = 60*t fast train
d = 24*t + 72 slow train The distances are the same so they can be equated..

Step Three
Solve the equation
60t = 24t + 72 Subtract 24t from both sides.
60t - 24t = 72
36t = 72 Divide by 48
t = 72 / 36
t = 2 hours.

How far does the fast train go in 2 hours?
d = r * t
r = 60 mph
t = 2 hours.
d = 60 * 2
d = 120 miles

How far does the slow train go in 2 hours.
r = 24 mph
t = 2 hours
d = 24 * 2
d = 48 miles

But the slow train started out 72 miles ahead of the fast train. It's distance from Boston is 48 + 72 = 120 miles.

Answer: Both trains will meet 120 miles away from Boston <<<<< Answer

Working her way through school, Kathy works two part-time jobs for a total of 23 hours a week. Job A pays $5.70 per hour, and Jo
trapecia [35]

Answer:

Kathy worked 11 hours at job A and 12 hours at job B, the week she made US$ 146.70.

Step-by-step explanation:

1. Let's review all the information given for solving this question:

Rate per hour of Job A = US$ 5.70

Rate per hour of Job B = US$ 7.00

Earnings received by Kathy during the week = US$ 146.70

Total time worked by Kathy during the week = 23 hours

Hours at job A = x

Hours at job B = 23 -x

2. Let's find how many hours Katy worked at each job:

This is the equation that we'll use:

5.70x + 7 (23 - x) = 146.70

5.70x + 161 - 7x = 146.70

- 1.3x = 146.70 - 161 (Subtracting 161 at both sides)

-1.3x = - 14.30

1.3x = 14.3 (Multiplying by - 1 at both sides)

x = 14.3/1.3 = 11 (Dividing by 1.3 at both sides)

Kathy worked 11 hours at job A and 12 hours at job B.

3. Proof of x = 11

5.70 x + 7 (23 - x) = 146.70

5.70 (11) + 7 (23 - 11) = 146.70

62.70 + 7 (12) = 146.70

62.70 + 84 = 146.70

146.70 = 146.70

The value of x = 11 is correct.

One eighth of a number is ten less than one third of the number. Find the number.
GarryVolchara [31]
X/8 - 10 = x/3

bring the values with the variable on one side

x/3 - x/8 = 10

find a common denominator and subtract these fractions

8x/24 - 3x/24 = -10

now subtract fractions

8x - 3x = 5x

5x/24 = -10

multiply both sides by 24

5x = -240

divide both sides by 5

x = -48

the number is -48
