Mammals. I am no scientist, but I think that they are closer to mammals due to the fact that they are warm-blooded, and they raise their young. Reptiles are cold blooded and usually leave their offspring to fend for themselves.
It is like a barrier, or wall. It helps infection and bacteria stay out. It can also help you indicate whether you are getting infection in the inside of your body. if you're skin is inflamed, that is a sign of disease or infection.

Secondary Consumer (Raccoons)
Tertiary Consumer (Bear)
So squirrels would be at a lower trophic level.
