Telomeres are structures or heterochromatic regions that are located at the end of each DNA strand and helps in protecting the chromosome. They prevent strands of DNA from being damaged which can result to destruction of cell functions.
These heterochromatic regions consists of repetitive nucleotide sequences, and they play a major role in preventing the chromosomes from deteriorating or fusing with other chromosomes. In general, telomeres play an important role in the preservation of genome information.
