When there is insufficient oxygen in the muscle cells for any further oxidation of pyruvate and NADH formed in glycolysis, NAD+ is regenerated from NADH by reducing pyruvate to lactate. The enzyme lactate dehydrogenase transforms lactate to pyruvate
