A simple way to heat water (or better yet, hot chocolate) in your car is to use a small immersion heater. This is nothing more t

han a simple resistor that is waterproof so you can dunk it in your beverage. The resistor is connected to the car's 12-V battery and, through electrons colliding with the lattice as discussed in class, the resistor heats up and gives the heat to your beverage.
a) If the resistance of the heater was increased, would it speed up or slow down the heating process? Explain your answer.

b) Immediately after turning on the heater, is the current in the circuit increasing, decreasing, or remaining constant? Assume the resistor is made of Nichrome wire. Explain your answer.

Answer:

a) Slow down

b) Decreasing.

Explanation:

a) The energy that is converted to heat can be written as:

P=V^2/R

As the resistance increases, with constant voltage, the amount of power dissipated as heat decreases (less current trought the resistor).

Then, we can conclude that, as the energy dissipated by the resistor is less as its resistance is increased, the heating process will slow down.

b) We have to evaluate what happens with the resistivity of the resistor during the heating.

We know that resistivity of a nichrome wire increases with the temperature. With the conclusion of the previous question, if the resistivity increases and the voltage stays constant, the current in the circuit will decrease as the resistor became hotter.

We can conclude this using the Ohm's law:

I=V/R

Answer:

f (frequency) = V / y   where V is the speed of sound and y the wavelength

f = 1500 m/s / 1.5 m = 1000 / sec

T (period) = 1 / f = .001 sec

Suppose you replace the horn by a drum then the period would be the time between the beats of the drum - now if the source is moving towards the observer then the distance between crests  of the wave produced by the drum will be shortened by V * T because of the motion of the drum "towards" the observer, and since the wavelength is shorter the frequency heard by the observer will be higher, and the higher the speed of of the car the shorter the wavelength as seen by the observer and the higher the frequency.

Also, if the car is moving away from the observer then the distance between the crests of the wave emitted will be further apart, and the observer will hear a lower frequency.

Answer:

a. -369.36J

b. -123.9J

c. 9.52m

Explanation:

From the expression for kinetic energy

K. E=1/2mv^2

Since the mass is constant, but the velocity changes. Hence the change in kinetic energy is

K.E=1/2*19(3.6²-7.2²)

K.E= -369.36J

b. to determine the workdone by the force,we determine the distance moved.

But the acceleration is from

F=ma ,

a=f/m

a=-13/19

0.68m/s²

the distance moved is

s=v²/2a

s=3.6²/2*0.68

s=9.52m

Hence the work done is

W=force * distance

W=-13*9.52

W=-123.9J

d. the distance moved is

s=v²/2a

s=3.6²/2*0.68

s=9.52m
