A deadline gives you a time period in which you need to acomplish something. Therefore, with any deadline you have you need to use your time-management skills to get it done in the required time period. Time-management includes prioritizing, organization, delegation, strategic planning, and problem solving. If you don't know how long the work will actually take you to get done or if you don't prioritize the work over having fun, you might not make the deadline.
I normally leave for classes 1 hour before it starts, to give me enough time to get from point A to point B, and time to deal with traffic etc. I'd say on a professional level, almost everyone relies on their time-management skills daily. But when relaxing or going around to a movie, I don't really care as much. Hope this helps!
