A statement that is true of BOTH the sodium potassium pump (a type of active transport) and facilitated diffusion is that;

B) Both move materials from high concentration to low concentration

Facilitated diffusion and the sodium pump are both the transport of substances through a cell membrane along a concentration gradient with the aid of carrier proteins.

A difference is that facilitated diffusion is passive transport which means, no energy is used.

The correct statement for the sodium-potassium pump and the facilitated diffusion is B) Both move the material from high concentration to low concentration.

Further explanation

Molecular transport across the membrane that occurs in animal cells can occur passively or actively. Active transport is the movement of molecules across a membrane that occurs against a concentration gradient with the help of energy in the form of ATP. Called against the concentration gradient because the molecules will move from a low concentration solution to a high concentration solution. Important to remember is that the molecules are solutes that move.

Active Transport does not seek to find the same concentration between the two parties. This transportation aims to maintain the concentration of certain molecules in normal amounts so that the body can work optimally. Some molecules are kept in high concentrations inside the cell and low outside the cell, and vice versa. The discussion of active transport will be emphasized in the sodium-potassium pump, endocytosis, and exocytosis.

Animal cells have high potassium concentrations and low sodium concentrations, conversely in extracellular fluid low potassium concentrations while high sodium concentrations. Potassium needs to be maintained in high concentrations so that important physiological processes in the cell are not disturbed.

The sodium-potassium pump occurs with the help of a carrier protein. An integral protein that acts as a carrier for ions in and out of cells. This protein will be active if it gets energy in the form of ATP. The phosphate group in ATP will bind to the carrier protein and cause changes in the structure of the protein which results in potassium ions entering the cell and sodium exiting the cell.

Vlad1618 [11]
Yes, Jan should undergo genetic sequencing.BRCA1/BRCA2 are the causes of 20-25% of all hereditary breast cancers, so if Jan's mother and sister both have breast cancer, then the odds are that she has BRCA1 as well.

How does the cell theory describe the levels of organization of living organisms ???
Burka [1]
It took over 200 years for the "cell theory" to be formalized and accepted. Hooke and Leeuwenhoek were early microscopist's.... but at the time the nature of matter, the belief in spontaneous generation, and the idea there were little worlds within little worlds ad infinitinum was popular. The discovery of the periodic table and establishment that atoms were real, the demolishing of spontaneous generation, all happened at the time that Schwann and Schleiden (and others) were working with better microscopes, better ideas about the material world, and better observations...... thus the cell theory.
