The cotton gin, invented in 1793 in Georgia by the Eli Whitney, is a ginning machine to separate the seed of cotton from its fiber.

The machine made it possible to simplify a work requiring then a lot of manpower and carried out manually by slaves. It is a very important invention in the history of cotton cultivation, for which Eli Whitney received a patent dated March 14, 1794.

Another inventor, Hodgen Holmes, a former mechanical assistant to Eli Whitney, made an important improvement to Whitney's machine in 1796. By replacing the cylinder hooks with saws, he limited the rate of waste. His machine replaced the spiked drum with a series of circular saws mounted on a cylinder, spaced regularly.
