a so-called zero or solution is really just an x-intercept, in which case we set the dependent variable to 0, namely y = h(x) = 0 and solve for x to get it.

\bf h(x)=4x^2-8x-60\implies \stackrel{h(x)}{0}=4x^2-8x-60\implies \stackrel{\textit{dividing by 4}}{0=x^2-2x-15} \\\\\\ 0=(x-5)(x+3)\implies x= \begin{cases} 5\\ \boxed{-3} \end{cases}

why is -3 the smallest? well, -3 is much smaller than 5 :), the further to the left you go on the number line, the smaller the number.

During a promotional weekend, a state fair gives a free admission to every 188th person that enters the fair. On Saturday, there
damaskus [11]

Answer: 81 people

Step-by-step explanation:

Number of people that attended fair on Saturday = 6737

Number of people that got free admission = 6737/188 = 35.8.

Free admission on Saturday = 35

Number of people that attended fair on Saturday = 8669

Number of people that got free admission = 8669/188 = 46.1

Free admission on Sunday = 46

The people who received a free admission over the two days will be:

= 35 + 46

= 81 people

One number is 18 more than another number. The sum of the numbers is 36. find the numbers
tatuchka [14]

We can use a system of equations in order to solve for both of the numbers. Let's start off by assigning variables to each number. The bigger number can be 'x', and the smaller number can be 'y'.

We can make two equations from the given:

x = 18 + y

("One number is 18 more than another number")

x + y = 36

("The sum of the numbers is 36")

If you look at the first equation, the variable 'x' already has a value (18 + y). We can input its value into the second equation in order to solve for y:

x + y = 36

(18 + y) + y = 36

18 + 2y = 36

2y = 18

y = 9

Input the value of 'y' into the first equation:

x = 18 + y

x = 18 + 9

x = 27

<u>One number is 27 and the other number number is 9.</u>

<u></u>

Let me know if you'd like me to explain anything I did here.
