<em>Physical activity</em> refers to any body movement that is produced by the contraction of the skeletal muscles and that produces substantial increases in the body's energy consumption compared to being at rest. Some examples are moving from one place to another, applauding, shopping, doing housework.

<em>Physical exercise</em> is a planned and structured type of physical activity. It consists of repeating certain movements in order to improve or maintain some of the components of physical fitness, for example walking in a planned way, jogging, running, swimming, muscle strengthening exercises in the gym. Physical exercise must be well planned and have specific characteristics: Type of exercise, intensity at which it is to be practiced, frequency with which it is to be practiced and time per session.
