A tactic that was used by companies to hurt unions was <em>hiring scabs</em>. Scab is an informal and disapproving word that refers to a person that continues working while other people of the organization are on strike, or someone that takes the place of someone who is striking. During the 1800s, workers went on strike to get better salaries.
