A stimulus is an event or activity that can produce a physiologic response.
Same as your given meaning above, "to goad, urge or prod" is to induce or elicit a response from something. And just like the action of a stimulus, it can provoke a reaction. This can happen inside or outside of the body.

The term stimulus is also called impulse stimulare, means to goad, prod, or urge dies in Latin. This relates to stimulus because it provoke a compulsion to make an organism change its behavior. The urge relay a potential internal stimuli occurring in its own body to make a move. An example of this is hunger and thirst where the body send signals for a need of more energy and hydration. This causes human and animal to search for food and water.
