State if each graph is continuous or discrete. then State whether it is a function

Step-by-step explanation:

Discrete data can only have certain values.  For example, if you roll a die, there are only 6 numbers you can get.  Continuous data can have any value within a range.

Graphically, discrete data will appear as only points, where as continuous data appears as a line or curve.

So the top left and bottom right graphs are discrete.  The top right and bottom left graphs are continuous.

To be a function, each x value can only have 1 y value.  Graphically, we can check this using the "vertical line method".  Imagine a vertical line (or use a ruler or straight edge) and move it from left to right.  If it ever crosses the graph in two or more places, the graph is not a function.

Therefore, the graphs on the left are not functions, and the graphs on the right are functions.

Answer:

f(x)=x^2

Step-by-step explanation:

All three functions in the figure are parabolic and thus share the parent function y=x^2. They are horizontally dilated by some constant (unless they aren't) and can all be represented with y=\pm ax^2, where a is some constant.

Plug in point the line passes through to find that constant. For f(x), we can see the function clearly passes through (2,4):

4=a\cdot 2^2,\\4=4a,\\a=1

Therefore, the function of f(x) is f(x)=1x^2=\boxed{x^2}

<u>Given</u>:

The distance (in kilometers) Dora hiked is modeled as a function of time.

We need to determine the average rate of change in distance hiked, measured in kilometers per hour, between 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.

<u>Average rate of change:</u>

Let us write the time and the distance hiked in coordinates for the time 8:30 am and 1:30 pm.

Thus, the coordinates are (8.30, 4) and (1,12)

The average rate of change can be determined using the formula,

m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}

Substituting the points (8.30, 4) and (1.30,12), we get;

m=\frac{12-4}{1.30-8.30}

m=\frac{8}{-7}

m=-1.14

Rounding off to the nearest whole number, we get;

m=-1

Therefore, the average rate of change is -1.

Multiply the polynomials (x+3)(x^2-6x+5)
LekaFEV [45]

Answer:

\huge\boxed{x^3-3x^2-13x+15}

Step-by-step explanation:

\text{Use FOIL:}\\\\(a+b)(c+d)=ac+ad+bc+bd

(x+3)(x^2-6x+5)\\\\=(x)(x^2)+(x)(-6x)+(x)(5)+(3)(x^2)+(3)(-6x)+(3)(5)\\\\=x^3-6x^2+5x+3x^2-18x+15\\\\\text{combine like terms}\\\\=x^3+(-6x^2+3x^2)+(5x-18x)+15\\\\=x^3-3x^2-13x+15
