A photon of UV light causes mutations in the double-stranded DNA via a photochemical reaction. The product of such photochemical reaction in DNA is a cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer. Dimers may be repaired by mechanisms of photoreactivation or nucleotide excision repair (NER), but if the repair doesn’t occur dimers are mutagenic.

UV light is absorbed by a double bond in pyrimidine bases (thymine and cytosine in DNA). The bond is opened and UV-modified base can now react with neighbouring molecules. If neighbouring molecule is another pyrimidine base, the UV-modified base forms direct covalent bonds with it. A cyclic ring (cyclobutane), not normally found in DNA, is formed (links the two pyrimidines). Next step is forming a single bond between two carbon atoms on the rings. The product of this reaction is a 6-4 molecule pyrimidine-pyrimidone which is more mutagenic than cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers.

Nearly all cells found in multicellular organisms have similar needs. As a result, most organisms have developed similar _______
melomori [17]
This statement is mostly false. While all organisms do share basic needs to sustain life, there is a wide variety of strategies employed to meet these needs. For example, while most plants receive nutrients from soil, some live in soils which do not fully meet their needs. Such plants sometimes kill and use animals in order to meet these needs (i.e. venus flytrap) or partner with bacteria that produce some of the nutrients they need (i.e legumes).

Diffusion, Osmosis and Enzymes
Nana76 [90]

The given statements can be matched as following:

a)The diffusion of water from a high concentration to a low concentration - Osmosis

b)Lowers the amount of energy needed to perform chemical reactions - Enzymes

c)When you breath O2 passes into your blood stream while CO2 passes out of your blood stream -Simple Diffusion

d)Involved with, but does not become a part of chemical reactions -Enzymes

e)Small molecules with no charge can move through semi-permeable membranes by this process- Simple Diffusion

Explanation:

a) Osmosis is generally defined as the process by which water is transported from a region of Higher concentration to the region of Lower concentration.

b) Enzymes are well known to reduce the amount of energy required or needed for a chemical reaction to take place.

c)The process by which oxygen passes through our blood stream and carbondioxide passes through the other is known as simple diffusion process.

d) Enzymes are ones that actively gets involved in the chemical reaction but they will never become a part of that chemical reaction.

e) Diffusion is the process by which very small molecules that carries no charge moves through semi permeable membrane.

What term is used when the concentrations of solutes inside and outside a cell are in equilibrium?
Schach [20]

Isotonic solutions is the term used when the concentrations of solutes inside and outside a cell are in equilibrium.

Explanation:

The isotonic solution is one which have same osmotic pressure on either side of the semi-permeable membrane.

In the isotonic solution there will be free movement of only water molecules and not solutes.

isotonic solution is the solution when two solutions have equal solute concentration.

The concentration of the solution will be in equilibrium.
