ratio
12 miles per 60 minutes
12/60=1/5
1 miles per 5 minues
1:5=x:48
1/5=x/48
multiply both sides by 5*48
48=5x
divide both sides by 5

1 hour=60 minutes.
we can solve this problem by the rule of three:

12 miles-----------------60 minutes
x---------------------------48 minutes

x=(12 miles * 48 minutes) / 60 minutes=9.6 miles

Answer: Thomas can travel 9.6 miles in 48 minutes.

Since you know it's a square, you also know that all the sides are 3 2/3. So to find area you multiply, so 3 2/3 x 3 2/3. An easy way to do this is convert it to a mixed number (11/3) and then multiply:
11/3 x 11/3 = 121/9
