The attack on Pearl Harbor was the day that America officially joined the war. Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor without a prior declaration of war. They tried to cripple the US fleet so that they would not interfere in their war in Asia. It seemed that the US fleet suffered heavy losses but since the US was an industrial powerhouse they recovered rather quickly.
