Astronauts use a centrifuge to simulate the acceleration of a rocket launch. The centrifuge takes 40.0 s to speed up from rest t

o its top speed of 1 rotation every 1.20 s. The astronaut is strapped into a seat 4.00 m from the axis.
What is the astronaut's tangential acceleration during the first 40.0 s?

How many g's of acceleration does the astronaut experience when the device is rotating at top speed? Each 9.80 m/s^2 of acceleration is 1 g.

Explanation:

Given that,

Initial speed, u = 0

No of rotation is 1 in every 1.2 s

The astronaut is strapped into a seat 4.00 m from the axis, r = 4 m

(a) Let \alpha is the angular acceleration during the first 40 s. It is given by :

\alpha =\dfrac{\omega}{t}

\omega=\dfrac{2\pi r}{t}

\omega=\dfrac{2\pi }{1.1}

\omega=5.71\ rad/s

\alpha =\dfrac{5.71}{40}

\alpha =0.142\ rad/s^2

Tangential acceleration is given by :

a=r\times \alpha

a=4\times 0.142

a=0.568\ m/s^2

(b) Let a is the centripetal acceleration. It is given by :

a=\omega^2r

a=5.71^2\times 4

a=130.41\ m/s^2

Since, g=9.8\ m/s^2

a=13.3\ g

Hence, this is the required solution.

A rocket, initially at rest, is fired vertically with an upward acceleration of 10 m/s2. At an altitude of 0.50 km, the engine o
noname [10]

Answer:

The maximum altitude reached with respect to the ground = 0.5 + 0.510 = 1.01 km

Explanation:

Using the equations of motion,

When the rocket is fired from the ground,

u = initial velocity = 0 m/s (since it was initially at rest)

a = 10 m/s²

The engine cuts off at y = 0.5 km = 500 m

The velocity at that point = v

v² = u² + 2ay

v² = 0² + 2(10)(500) = 10000

v = 100 m/s

The velocity at this point is the initial velocity for the next phase of the motion

u = 100 m/s

v = final velocity = 0 m/s (at maximum height, velocity = 0)

y = vertical distance travelled after the engine shuts off beyond 0.5 km = ?

g = acceleration due to gravity = - 9.8 m/s²

v² = u² + 2gy

0 = 100² + 2(-9.8)(y)

- 19.6 y = - 10000

y = 510.2 m = 0.510 km

So, the maximum altitude reached with respect to the ground = 0.5 + 0.510 = 1.01 km

Hope this helps!!!

A diverging lens of focal length 18.0m is used to view a shark that is 90.0m away from the lens. If the image formed is 1.0m lon
Reil [10]

Answer:

i. + 22.5 m ii. 4.0 m

Explanation:

i. Image distance

Using the lens formula

1/u + 1/v = 1/f where f = focal length = + 18.0 m, u = object distance = distance of shark away from lens = + 90.0 m and v = image distance from lens = unknown

So, we find v

1/v = 1/f - 1/u

= 1/+18 - 1/+90

= (5 - 1)/90

= 4/90

v = 90/4

= + 22.5 m

So the image is real and formed 22.5 m away on the other side of the lens.

ii Length of Shark

Using the magnification formula, m = image height/object height = image distance/object distance. image height = 1.0 m where object height = length of shark.

m = image distance/object distance

= v/u

= +22.5/+90

= 0.25

0.25 = image height/object height

So,

object height = image height/0.25

= 1.0 m/0.25

= 4.0 m

So, the length of the shark is 4.0 m
