For an atom, the atomic number is equal to number of protons and number of electrons. Mass number is sum of number of protons and neutrons in nucleus of an atom. Atomic number is denoted by symbol Z and mass number is denoted by symbol A.

The atomic number of strontium is Z=38 and mass number is A=90.

Now, Z=n_{p}=n_{e}=38

Also, A=n_{p}+n_{n}=90

Putting the value of n_{p} in above equation,

A=38+n_{n}=90

Or,

n_{n}=90-38=52

Thus, number of neutrons are 52.

Now, after losing two electrons, number of protons and neutrons remains the same but number of electrons becomes 38-2=36

Therefore, a strontium-90 atom that has lost 2 electrons has <u>38</u> protons, <u>52</u> neutrons and <u>36</u> electrons.

5. How does the abundance of isotopes of an element relate to its average atomic mass?
alukav5142 [94]
<span>The average atomic mass of an element is the mass you see on a periodic table for that element. It is a weighted average of all the isotopes for that element based on the percentage of how much of an element is a specific isotope and the mass of each isotope. If an element has an abundance of isotopes, the isotopes with the highest and lowest masses may be more significantly different than the average atomic mass for elements with fewer isotopes.</span>
