Enzymes are bio-catalysts which speed up the rate of chemical reactions by <u>lowering the activation energy</u> for the reaction and <u>producing binding energy</u>. But during chemical reaction the enzymes are unchanged and can be reused for the same chemical reaction. Most of the enzymes are proteins and without enzymes a biochemical reaction cannot take place.

For example: Amylase catalyzes the conversion of starch into sugar.
