(a) dy/dx is positive when the function is increasing
dy^2/dx^2 is positive when the graph is concave upward
Both are positive at point B
Answer: Point B

(b)  dy/dx is negative when the function is decreasing
dy^2/dx^2 is negative when the graph is concave downward
Both are negative at point E
Answer: Point E

Note main properties of \dfrac{dy}{dx} and \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}:

1.  \dfrac{dy}{dx}:

  • if  \dfrac{dy}{dx}>0, the function is increasing;
  • if  \dfrac{dy}{dx} the function is decreasing;
  • if  \dfrac{dy}{dx}=0, the function can have minimum or maximum.

2.  \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}:

  • if \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}>0, the function is concave up;
  • if \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} the function is concave down;
  • if \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}=0, the function can have inflection point.

Now consider all options:

1. If \dfrac{dy}{dx}>0, \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}>0, then you should pick point B.

2. If \dfrac{dy}{dx} \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} then you should pick point E.

3. If \dfrac{dy}{dx} \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}>0, then you should pick point A.

Note that

  • at point C \dfrac{dy}{dx}>0, \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}
  • at point D \dfrac{dy}{dx}=0, \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}

Which characteristics best describe an acute isosceles triangle?
Paladinen [302]
Isocoleese means that 2 sides and hence 2 angles are same measure
acute means that all 3 angles are less than 90 degrees

We can rule out choice I since acut means less than 90

II is a possibility, but it doesn't best describe it

III. that is true, but it doesn't include the isocileese part

IV. that is true, but doesn't include the acute part

not sure, either III or IV

What price do farmers get for the peach crops? in the third week of June, a random sample of 40 farming regions gave a sample me
prohojiy [21]
Given:
Sample size, n = 40
Sample mean, xb = $6.88
Population std. deviation, σ = $1.92 (known)
Confidence interval = 90%

Assume normal distribution for the population.
The confidence interval is
(xb + 1.645*(σ/√n), xb - 1.645*(σ/√n)
= (6.88 + (1.645*1.92)/√40, 6.88 - (1.645*1.92)/√40)
= (7.38, 6.38)

Answer: The 90% confidence interval is (7.38, 6.38)
