Adding a positive to a negative, you would look at the number with the greater absolute value, and that number would determine the sign of the sum. 

5 - 3 = 2

Since 5 is bigger, you use that sign

That is the number line. Add 3 to -5 and you get -2. ( a negative + a positive = A negative) ( A negative + a Negative = A positive)
