If you refer to the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age, then New England was an ideal place because of its proximity to the ocean by which good could be shipped all over the world and therefore make more money and prosper. If you refer to the colonial years, then it was an ideal place because from the large cities of New England goods should be shipped out of Boston Harbor and sent to the mother country, England.
