Answer:

x = 3/8

y = -7/8

Step-by-step explanation:

y = -5x + 1

5x + y = 1

y = 3x - 2

-3x + y = -2

Elimination

5x + y = 1

-3x + y = -2

__________--

8x = 3

x = 3/8

5x + y = 1 | ×3 |

-3x + y = -2 | ×5 |

15x + 3y = 3

-15x + 5y = -10

____________+

8y = -7

y = -7/8

Nookie1986 [14]

Answer:

It seems that your options aren't correct as the right answer is -5.3333... (recurring)

Step-by-step explanation:

1)  2x + 4 = 20 + 5x   (subtract by the smallest unknown)

  -2x                  -2x

2)  4        = 20 + 3x

    -20 -20 (now subtract each side by 20 as we want to leave the unknown on one side and another number on the other side.

3) -16       = 3x   (Divide each side by 3)

   ÷3        = ÷3

4) -5.33333... = x

Now we have found x but if you're unsure you can substitute to see if your answer is correct.

2 x -5.3333 + 4 = -6.6666

20 + 5 x -5.3333= -6.6665

Our answer is correct! (When answers are rounded, it is equal to the same thing).

Flying against the wind, a jet travels 2160 miles in 3 hours. Flying with the wind, same jet travels 6000 miles in 6 hours. What
marissa [1.9K]

Answer:

The velocity of jet in still air is 860miles/hour and velocity of wind is 140miles/hour.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the rate of the jet in still air and y be the rate of the wind.

Given:

Velocity against wind, a jet travels 2160 miles in 3 hours.

Velocity against wind =\frac{2160}{3} = 720 miles/hour

Flying with the wind, same jet travels 6000 miles in 6 hours.

Flying with the wind =\frac{6000}{6} = 1000 miles/hour

As such its velocity against wind is x-y

and with wind is x+y therefore

x-y=720------------(1)

x+y=1000---------------(2)

Adding equation 1 and 2.

2x=1720

x=\frac{1720}{2}

x=860

Put x value in equation 2

860+y=1000

y=1000-860

y=140

Hence velocity of jet in still air is 860miles/hour and velocity of wind is 140miles/hour.
