Gazing over the parched earth of the remote location, Young declared, “This is the place,” and the pioneers began preparations for the thousands of Mormon migrants who would follow. Seeking religious and political freedom, the Mormons began planning their great migration from the east after the murder of Joseph Smith, the Christian sect’s founder and first leader.

Why were taxes in Southern states raised sometimes four times higher in 1867?
never [62]

Answer:

Taxes in Southern states raised sometimes four times higher in 1867 because Radical Republicans in Congress passed several laws increasing taxes in order to charge the Southern states with the costs of the Civil War. In addition, they enforced property taxes in states that were not collecting them before the Civil War.

The intention of the Radical Republicans was to finance the high cost of Reconstruction directly from the coffers of those whom they considered to be the only ones responsible for the war: the southern states.

This led the conservative Democrats in the south of the country to reject all kinds of subsequent republican policies, putting enormous obstacles to the development of Reconstruction. In fact, the fact of having increased taxes triggered the general malaise that caused Reconstruction to end 10 years later, due to the lack of collaboration from the population of the south.

Why were people so angry, to the point of violence, about the integration of our schools?
Citrus2011 [14]

Answer:

They did not want to share equal rights with African Americans.

Explanation:

School integration ended race-based segregation within American public and private schools. After the Civil War, the Southern States tried to limit the rights of African American by implementing the laws of Jim Crow. The Southern found a way to keep the African Americans separate by introducing the segregation laws. These laws separated African Americans from the white by building different schools, public places, parks, etc.

When the government decided to look upon the issue of education, Brown v. Board of Education took decision declared the same school to everyone. Most southerners had no plan of desegregating their schools and were angry and in point of violence as they did not want to maintain a separate school for the African American.
