The gene that causes sickle-cell disease is present in a higher percentage of residents of sub-Saharan Africa than among those o

f African descent living in the United States. Even though this gene causes sickle-cell disease, it also provides some protection from malaria, a serious disease that is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa but absent in the United States. Discuss an evolutionary process that could account for the different percentages of the sickle-cell gene among residents of the two regions.

Ans.

Sickle-cell disorder is a genetic disorder, which shows defected red blood cells, due to mutation in the genes for hemoglobin protein.

Malaria is common in sub-Saharan Africa region and there, natural selection favored gene for sickle cells, because it might be beneficial to people having sickle cell disease that makes them able to survive in such condition and transmit their genes to offspring.

On the other hand, in those Africans, who moved to United States, where malaria is uncommon or absent, natural selection favored normal, wild type genes, resulting in fewer people with defected sickle cell.

Hence,  sub-Saharan African population shows higher percentage of mutated gene for sickle cell as compared to population of United States.

Thus, the evolutionary process behind this difference is 'natural selection.'

Fault trees are an approach to hazard analysis that, for each identified hazard, break down that hazard to find how that hazard
Alexus [3.1K]

Hazards are placed at the root of the tree and determining the cause of the hazard is the correct option for the following hazard analysis questions.

Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) explores how selected “top” faults (abnormal conditions) or fault events such as accidental/unwanted releases of hazardous materials can be resolved to their causes. Hazard analysis is defined as the process of gathering and interpreting information about the hazards and conditions leading to their existence in order to determine what is food safety related and must be addressed in the HACCP plan. Hazard analysis is used as the first step in the risk assessment process. The result of hazard analysis is the identification of different types of hazards. A hazard is a potential condition that may or may not exist.

Describe the potential effects when a keystone species is removed from a community.
Vlad [161]

Answer:

Explanation:

A keystone species is the one which plays an important role in maintaining the structure of the ecosystem. On the keystone species many other species of the ecosystem are dependent upon.

The potential effects associated with the keystone species includes the following:

1. No other species will be capable of filling the same ecological niche. Hence, the dependent organisms will suffer and the ecosystem will change drastically.

2. The ecosystem will be populated by the invasive species which will affects the population of native species.
