Radioactive gold-198 is used in the diagnosis of liver problems. The half-life of this isotope is 2.7 days. If you begin with a

sample of 8.6 mg of the isotope, how much of this sample remains after 1.4 days?

Answer: 6.1 mg

Explanation:

Expression for rate law for first order kinetics is given by:

t=\frac{2.303}{k}\log\frac{a}{a-x}

where,

k = rate constant

t = age of sample

a = let initial amount of the reactant

a - x = amount left after decay process

a) for completion of half life:

Half life is the amount of time taken by a radioactive material to decay to half of its original value.

t_{\frac{1}{2}}=\frac{0.693}{k}

k=\frac{0.693}{2.7days}=0.26days^{-1}

b) sample remains after 1.4 days

1.4=\frac{2.303}{0.26}\log\frac{8.6}{a-x}

0.16=\log\frac{8.6}{a-x}

\frac{8.6}{a-x}=1.4

(a-x)=6.1mg

The sample remains after 1.4 days is 6.1 mg

How you rank the following items in order of complexity.
Natalija [7]

Answer:

lowest to Highest

Carbon atom

Methane molecule (CH4)

Graphite

Diamond

Explanation:

A carbon atom would be the lowest complexity on this list, that is because it is a lone molecule with no other bonding between other atoms. The same forces interacting between the carbon atom would be the same for the others.

Next would be methane. Methane is a hydrocarbon composed of a single carbon atom bonded covalently with four hydrogens. The electrons within the hydrogen atoms repel each other causing them to be dispersed around the carbon atom to form a   tetrahedral shape. While more complex, the other two are continuous structures made from carbon atoms bonded to gather to form crystal structures.

Graphite is considered to be a crystal structure, just like a diamond. However, the biggest difference between them is their atomic and crystal frameworks. Diamonds have a rigid 3-dimensional structure whilst graphite is composed of 2d planes of graphite with carbon-carbon double bonds connecting the layers. Due to this, a diamond would be more complex then grpahite

What volume (in L) of H2 would be collected at 22.0oC and a pressure of 713 torr if 2.65 g of zinc react according to the equati
ASHA 777 [7]

Answer: 83.74L

Explanation:

Temp. = 295K

P = 713torr = 0.938atm

Mass = 2.65g

PV = nRT

V = nRT/PV

n = Mass/Molar mass

Molar mass of Hydrogen gas = 1.00784*2= 2.0156g/mok

n = 2.65/2.0156 = 1.31469mol

V = 1.31469*0.08205*295/0.938

V = 83.74L

The volume = 83.74L

The 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Douglas Osheroff, Robert Richardson, and David Lee for discovering superfluidity
aleksklad [387]

Explanation:

As it is known that entropy is the degree of randomness of the molecules of a substance or object.

When particles or molecules of a substance are placed in orderly manner then it means that there is low entropy. But when molecules are randomly moving then it means the system is in disorder and will have high entropy.

Since, molecules of a solid are orderly arranged. Therefore, solid substances have very low entropy.

Liquid molecules have the ability to slide past each other. Hence, liquids have moderate entropy whereas gas molecules are held by weak intermolecular force.

So, molecules of a gas move much more rapidly and hence, they have high entropy.

As it is given that 3 He is cooled to 2.7 mK, and the liquid settles into an ordered super-fluid state.

Therefore, there will occur a decrease in entropy.

Thus, we can conclude that the sign of entropy for the given case is negative.
