9. A statue is to be scaled down isomorphically (It will have its size changed without changing its shape). It starts with an in

itial height of 6.75 [m] and ends up with a final height of 2.15 [m]. If the mass of the original statue with a uniform mass density was 44.5 [kg], calculate the mass of the smaller model with the same uniform mass density.

Answer:

   m = 1.45 kg

Explanation:

For this exercise we look for size reduction in height

              Reduction = y / y₀

              Reduction = 2.15 / 6.75

              Reduction = 0.3185

As the statue should not be deformed, all reduction has the same factor.

Let's use the concept of density

       ρ = m / V

Initial statue

         ρ = m₀ / V₀

It is reduced

         V = x y z

         V = 0.3185 x₀ 0.3185 y₀ 0.3185 z₀

         V = 0.3185³ V₀

Density is

         ρ = m / V

         ρ = m / 0.3185³ V₀

As the density remains constant we can match them

         m₀ / Vo = m / 0.3185³ V₀

         m = 0.3185³ m₀

Let's calculate

        m = 0.3185³ 45

        m = 0.03231   45

        m = 1.45 kg

A tank having a volume of 0.85 m 3 initially contains water as a two-phase liquid-vapor mixture at 260 o C and a quality of 0.7.
Keith_Richards [23]

Answer:=14,160 kJ

Explanation: Let m1 and m2 be the initial and final amounts of mass within the tank, respectively. The steam properties are listed in the table below

Specific Internal SpecificTemp Pressure Volume Energy Enthalpy Quality Phase

C MPa m^3/kg kJ/kg kJ/kg

1 260 4.689 0.02993 2158 2298 0.7 Liquid Vapor Mixture

2 260 4.689 0.0422 2599 2797 1 Saturated Vapor

The mass initially contained in the tank is m1 = V/v1

m1 =0.85 m^3 /0.02993 m^3 /kg

= 28.4 kg

The mass finally contained in the tank is

m2 =V2/v

= 0.85 m^3 /0.0422 m^3 /kg

= 20.14 kg

The heat transfer is then

Qcv = m2u2 − m1u1 − he(m2 − m1)

Qcv = (20.14)(2599) − (28.4)(2158) − (2797)(20.14 − 28.4) = 14,160 kJ

Melting, boiling, and bending are considered physical changes, but burning is a chemical change. Explain why this is so.
SVEN [57.7K]
If you melt, boil, or bend an item, it is still the same thing. For instance, If you melt a sugar cube, it will stay as sugar. But if you burn paper, it will turn into ash. Hope this helps!
