Por ejemplo, de acuerdo a la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el agua contaminada produce más de 500 mil muertes prevenibles por diarrea al año, mientras que cada año entre 11 y 20 millones de personas se enferman de fiebre tifoidea, de las cuales se contabilizan entre 128 000 y 161 000 víctimas fatales. Por otra parte, la escasez de agua para consumo representa una de las causas principales de deshidratación y de otras complicaciones para la salud. Es por esta razón que la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) ha establecido que el acceso a fuentes confiables de agua potable representan un derecho humano fundamental para poder tener una vida sana.
