Even though the North technically won the war, no one truly won the war because the casualty rate was one that had never been seen before. Secondly, Buddhist temples and monasteries provided medical care, ran schools, provided seeds and milling to farmers, and travelers stayed in monasteries during their journeys as a safe place to stay. Also, Buddhist monks taught that giving away a son to a monastery would benefit their relatives for generations which was thought of as a good idea.
