Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who was the first to European to discover the lands of what is now known as Georgia. I'm pretty sure on the way through the southern United States he killed some natives (but lets not get into that). Now, settlers in Georgia were usually debtors that owed money to the British Government and were exiled there. Most of these settlers moved to Georgia during the mid 1700s. In the early 1700s, James Oglethorpe tried to make peace with the natives. He also tried converting them to Christianity and also established trade between the settlers and the natives.
