Truman's decision to drop atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not come easily. At this time, Truman was debating between using the atomic bombs and conducting a land invasion. However, Truman was advised by his military officers that a land invasion would actually cause more casualties than dropping bombs on these two cities.

Along with this, Truman had to consider implications for the post World War II society. The US and Soviet Union were emerging as global superpowers at this time. Many felt that the rivalry between these two countries was already starting at the end of 1945 . It has been said that Truman used these bombs to mainly scare the Soviet Union, showing that we have technological superiority over them.
