Earthquakes generate sound waves inside Earth. Unlike a gas, Earth can experience both transverse (S) and longitudinal (P) sound

waves. Typically, the speed of S waves is about 4.88 km/s, and that of P waves 7.94 km/s. A seismograph records P and S waves from an earthquake. The first P waves arrive 1.83 min before the first S waves. If the waves travel in a straight line, how far away does the earthquake occur?

Answer:

The earthquake is 1390.4014 km far away.

Explanation:

Given:

Speed of transverse (S) waves, v₁ = 4.88 km/s

Speed of longitudinal(P) waves, v₂ = 7.94 km/s

Time difference between the P waves and the S waves, Δt = 1.83 min

Also, 1 minute = 60 seconds

So,

Δt = 1.83 min = 1.83×60 seconds = 109.8 seconds

Let the earthquake is d km far from the seismograph. So,

Distance = d

Time taken by transverse (S) waves:

t₁ = d / v₁ = d / 4.88 seconds

Time taken by longitudinal(P) waves, v₂:

t₂ = d / v₂ = d / 7.94 seconds

Time difference,  Δt = t₁ - t₂ = (d / 4.88) - (d / 7.94)

109.8 = d (1/4.88 - 1/7.94)

109.8 = d (0.07897)

Solving for d,

<u>d = 109.8 / 0.07897 = 1390.4014 km</u>

<u>Thus, The earthquake is 1390.4014 km far away.</u>

What must happen to the electrons in a material to create an electric current?
photoshop1234 [79]
Electric current is a stream of electrons in motion, so they have to gain an energy from outside. There are two possibilities: one of them is the photoeletric phenomenom which is based on striking electrons from their orbits with the photon's energy. Second options is the substraction od eletric potentials on the edges od material.

Si la fuerza de fricción cinetica es 250N ¿Qué fuerza se necesita para mantener a la caja deslizándose a una velocidad constante
Solnce55 [7]

Answer:

250N

Explanation:

According to newton second law,

\sumF = ma

Fm - Ff = ma

Since the velocity is constant, a = 0m/s

Frictional force Ff = 250N

Substitute

Fm - 250 = m(0)

Fm - 250 = 0

Fm = 250N

Hence the force to keep the box sliding at constant speed is 250N

An important measure of LCD monitors is the time in milliseconds (ms) that it takes to turn a pixel on or off. What is this call
AleksandrR [38]

Answer:

Response Time

Explanation:

The time in milliseconds that LCD monitors takes to turn a pixel on or off is called Response time. A lower response time means that the LCD is able to cut down blurring or Ghosting of images thus producing better quality images.

Response time in general terms is the time interval that a system or a person takes to react to given input or event.

Suppose a 96.10 kg hiker has ascended to a height of 1841 m above sea level in the process of climbing Mt. Washington. By what p
lbvjy [14]

Answer:

0.029%

Explanation:

Weight on the surface is given by,

F_W = mg = (96.1Kg)(9.8m/s^2)=941.78N

The acceleration due to gravity at given height is,

g_h=\frac{gR^2}{R+h^2}

The weight in another height is equal to

F_h=mg_h

F_h= m*\frac{gR^2}{R+h^2}

F_h = \frac{F_WR^2}{(R+h)^2}

F_h=\frac{(941.78)(6.371*10^6)}{(6.371*10^6+1841)}

F_h = 941.50N

The change of the Weight is,

\frac{F-F_h}{F}*100=\frac{941.78-941.50}{941.78}*100=0.029\%
