Calories are units are energy. For most people, if they sat around and did nothing all day, they'd burn 1800 to 2000 calories. Nutrients, such as sodium and carbs, are what make calories. For example, there is 9 calories in 1g of fat. Calories are simply how much energy you are given per a gram of a nutrient.
