The pulmonary circulation, also called small circulation, is the one that carries blood from the heart to the lung and from the lung to the heart. It begins when blood leaves the right ventricle of the heart through the pulmonary artery, which divides and follows each one into a lung. In the lungs, arteries branch into small vessels called capillaries.

In capillaries, which involve the pulmonary alveoli, gas exchange occurs (hematosis). The oxygen inside the alveoli passes into the blood, which becomes oxygenated, and the carbon dioxide present in the blood passes into the capillary to be eliminated. After gas exchange, blood flows to the pulmonary veins, which will carry oxygenated blood back to the heart through the left atrium. From the left atrium, blood passes to the left ventricle and from there begins the systemic circulation.
