Answer:

Positive where x < -6 and x > 8.

Step-by-step explanation:

y = x^2 - 2x - 48

The graph of this is a parabola which opens upwards ( because the coefficient of x^2 ( = 1) is positive). So it will positive to the left and to the right of the points where  it passes through the x axis ( i e the zeros of the function).

x^2 - 2x - 48 =0

(x + 6)(x - 8) = 0

So the zeros are at x = (-6,0) and at (8, 0).

Therefore the intervals are  x < -6 and x > 8.

Prove the following using a direct proof:
hodyreva [135]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Prove: That the sum of the squares of 4 consecutive integers is an even integer.

An integer is a any directed number that has no decimal part or indivisible fractional part. Examples are: 4, 100, 0, -20,-100 etc.

Selecting 4 consecutive positive integers: 5, 6, 7, 8. Then;

5^{2} = 25

6^{2} = 36

7^{2} = 49

8^{2} = 64

The sum of the squares = 25 + 36 + 49 + 64

                                       = 174

Also,

Selecting 4 consecutive negative integers: -10, -11, -12, -13. Then;

-10^{2} = 100

-11^{2} = 121

-12^{2} = 144

-13^{2} = 169

The sum of the squares = 100 + 121 + 144 + 169

                                     = 534

Therefore, the sum of the squares of 4 consecutive integers is an even integer.

\bf S=\cfrac{n}{2}(a+I)\implies S=\cfrac{n(a+I)}{2}\implies 2S=n(a+I)\implies \stackrel{\textit{distributing}}{2S=na+nI} \\\\\\ 2S-nI=na\implies \cfrac{2S-nI}{n}=a

The weight of an object on mars varies directly is proportional as the weight of the object on earth a 75 pound object on earth
dedylja [7]

Answer:

It weighs 40 pounds on mars

Step-by-step explanation:

Direct proportion is the relationship between two variables when their ratio is equal to a constant value

  • It can be expressed as y = k x, where y varies directly as x and k is constant of variation
  • It can be expressed as  \frac{y_{1}}{x_{1}}=\frac{y_{2}}{x_{2}}=k

∵ The weight of an object on mars varies directly as the weight

    of the object on earth

∴ w(m) = k × w(e)

∵ The weight of the object on earth is 75 pound

∴ w(e) = 75

∵ The weight of this object on mars is 25 pounds

∴ w(m) = 25

- Substitute them in the equation of variation

∵ 25 = k × 75

- Divide both sides by 75

∴ \frac{1}{3} = k

∴ w(m) = \frac{1}{3} × w(e)

∵ An object weighs 120 pounds on earth

∴ w(e) = 120

- Substitute it in the equation of variation

∴ w(m) = \frac{1}{3} × 120

∴ w(m) = 40

∴ It weighs 40 pounds on mars
