I feel as if this has a far wide meaning, and can change beyond different people. To live as if you are dying is to live life to it's fullest, and basically do everything you'd want to do before facing death.
The story strongly suggest themes of human relationship and (possibly) a heist or job that seems to be involved.
The narrator is invited to dinner in remembrance of an event that occurred some time ago in which the Time Traveler announced he created a time machine. The Time Traveler then arrives, ragged and dirty. After cleaning himself up and eating he recounts his story those who were invited including the narrator.
