When the existence of a listening system in the White House was made public, a struggle between Nixon and the investigators about the restitution of the tapes of the recordings began. The involvement of the President was clarified. When Congress came to initiate the impeachment procedure, aimed at the dismissal of the president, Nixon decided to resign.
