Shifting in the y direction is as simple as adding the shift, ie.,

f(x) = x+4.

In the x direction it is trickier because then you have to replace x by (x-a) where a is the shift to the right... (but that wasn't asked here).

Answer:

f(x) = x+4

Step-by-step explanation:

If you vertically shift the linear parent function, f(x)=x up four units

If we shift any linear function vertically then the graph will be shifted up or down

Given that f(x)= x up 4 units

When a graph is shifted up 'a' units then f(x) becomes f(x)+a

For shifting vertically up, we add the number at the end

f(x)=x up four units

So f(x) = x+4

The equation of new function is f(x) = x+4

If we are given x such that 25^x-9^y=18 and 5^x-3^y=3, compute 5^x+3^y.
leonid [27]

25 = 5*5 and 9 = 3*3, which we can exploit to write

25^x-9^y=(5^2)^x-(3^2)^y=5^{2x}-3^{2y}=(5^x)^2-(3^y)^2

so that this expression is actually a difference of squares. We can factorize this to get

(5^x-3^y)(5^x+3^y)=18

and given that 5^x-3^y=3, we divide both sides by this to get

5^x+3^y=\dfrac{18}3=\boxed{6}
