A 1.00 g sample of a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution is placed in an Erlenmeyer flask and diluted with 20 mL of 1 M aqueous su

lfuric acid. To this solution is added 0.0200 M KMnO4 solution via a buret, until a pale purple color persists. This requires 22.50 mL of KMnO4 solution. What is the percent by mass of hydrogen peroxide in the original solution?

Following reaction is involved in present system:

2KMnO4  +  5H2O2 +  3H2SO4 →  2MnSO4    +     K2SO4  + 5O2  +   8H2O

From the above balance reaction, it can be seen that 2 moles of KMnO4 is consumed for every 5 moles of H2O2.

Now, percent by mass of hydrogen peroxide in the original solution can be estimated as follows:
percent by mass = \frac{\text{mass of H2O2(g)}}{\text(volume of H2SO4(ml))}X 100
∴percent by mass = \frac{\text{1}}{\text(25)}X 100
                             = 4 %

Chemists investigated an unknown substance and found it to have the following characteristics:
bija089 [108]

The answer is option C.

That is it is a heterogeneous mixture.

Heterogeneous mixture have the following properties:

1. Different components could be observed in the substance.

2. Different samples of the substance appeared to have different proportions of the components.

3.The components could be easily separated using filters and sorting.

Calculate the mole fraction of cai2 in an aqueous solution prepared by dissolving 0.400 moles of cai2 in 850.0 g of water.
alukav5142 [94]
1) Formulas:

a) mole fraction of component 1, X1

X1 =  number of moles of compoent 1 / total number of moles

b) Molar mass = number grams / number of moles => number of moles =  number of grams / molar mass

2) Application

Number of moles of CaI2 = 0.400

Molar mass of water = 18.0 g/mol

Number of moles of water: 850.0 g / 18.0 g/mol = 47.22 mol

Total number of moles = 0.400 + 47.22 =47.62

Molar fraction of CaI2 = 0.400 / 47.62 = 0.00840
